Axe is going quite a bit sexier this year with the “hot Christmas” video greeting card. You can personalize it on Facebook. Two girls in lingerie or bathing suits, and they’re riding a mechanical deer. I’m going to have to say it’s far more interesting than a dude in a towel… even if the special effects and quirky attitude are missing.

“Where’s the Little Girl?” and “Dancing Sheep” (funny videos)
If you like this first “Where’s the Girl” video below (“Save Miranda” by Zoochosis), you also may like the second wonderfully cute but edgy dancing-sheep-girl video titled “Thanks Smokey.” Good luck getting that hypnotic sheep-dancing song out of your head the next time you see an adorable animal… after you watch the Smokey clip, I recommend closing your eyes and listening to it. The audio engineering really adds more to the magic than you realize… a gust of wind, a bell, a jail cell door, sirens, and the repetitive pen tap. Brilliant.
Check out Patrick Scott’s director’s cut voiceover to get some really cool insights into the subtle aspects that make “Save Miranda” so fantastic. Here’s the NPR storyabout “turtle bridges” that so wonderfully sets up the protagonist, and bookmarks the comedy.
I can only hope that Scott/Zoochosis and The Station will collab. They’re both in Venice Beach, right?
Make Your Own CNN News: Nancy Grace Competition?
Looking for a DIY (do it yourself) news site to show TSA (transportation security administration) “pat downs” that are TMI (two much information)? Well put down your acronyms, and get out your cameras…
I’m not sure how long this has been around, but I find this consumer-generate “breaking news” site interesting. CNN has a consumer-generated news section.
People are uploading photos of car wrecks, notes for missing children, and (most importantly) videos about the latest TSA agent who looked at them funny (Parenthetically I saw a guy snapping a photo of his mom getting a perfectly appropriate TSA pat-down, and he was politely told to put the camera away… there’s some saucy Nancy-Grace like news).
- The bad news: the “most viewed” videos or photos have been seen only a dozen times or so. It’s not popular, and akin to setting up your own VHS camera and showing your homemade “news report” to your friends.
- The good news: it has a high perceptual value of importance and credibility despite the “not vetted by CNN news” disclaimer. It’s on CNN.com and listed as “breaking news.” So if it was produced well… it would be hard for someone to internalize the disclaimer.
How long before people start packaging up fake “product reviews” and using CNN to distribute them? I gather someone at CNN has the sad task of seeking and killing spam, but it seems like a spammer or infomercial’s playground… or at least a few Nancy Grace impersonators. I wonder if CNN would pull the content if someone took the “Nancy Grace model” just one step further and actually performed a live execution of the victim of the news report. Or at least a lynch mob.
Staten Island Girls (Katie Perry’s California Girls Parody)
Thumbs up to these gals for their amateur but brilliant Katie Perry satire of California Girls. It’s “Staten Island Girls,” and deliciously skanky and humorous depiction of New Jersey.
Just 5 years ago these gals would have been able to share this with their friends, but now the whole world gets to giggle. Oh wait. Five years ago Katie Perry wasn’t a household name, and these girls were probably playing with Strawberry Shortcake dolls.
My favorite two moments? The gardner hiding his face (criminal record?) and the gas station guy getting caught staring at the booty.
Betty White on SNL FTW
Well the nation’s talking about one thing. I mean besides the natural disasters and wars and stuff… And Nancy Grace, who is still covering Caylee and baby Jessica being stuck in a well.
Betty White on Saturday Night Live! Selected by a Facebook mob for the high honor, and propelling the show to its highest rating in 1.5 years. It’s okay to celebrate that even if you’re not a gay “Golden Girls” watcher.
Here’s DCLuigi doing his Betty White and his classic Christopher Walken (monotone voice, eyes staring at cue cards). This link takes you directly to the middle mark since it’s a slow build.
YouTube Hottest Women Turn Off Channel Playlists
Time to follow the lead of YouTube’s hottest women. They may be pretty and popular, but they’re not stupid.
If you have enabled playlists on your YouTube channel, turn them off immediately. Many popular YouTube creators (especially the hot women) have discovered this already — or never bothered creating and offering playlists. Disabling the playlists is the only way to make it easy for a viewer to sort your videos on their own.
Go immediately to your account page, select “edit” under the banner… then uncheck playlists.
Only if you disable playlists will the user have the ability to instantly sort videos by various attributes like “dated added,” “most viewed” or “top rated” (per image below).
But if you show off your playlists, it takes a rocket scientist to figure out how to sort your videos by any criteria. So they may see that “best of” collection you assembled, but they’ll never find your recent videos. Or they may see your recent videos but not find your best videos. And they may not even find the search field.
Until YouTube solves this (and some of the other major UI flaws) in channel pages, you’re going to have to trust the user to sort by “most viewed” or “top rated” if they are trying to find out if you’re any good (“most recent” is top by default), because the playlist functionality is hostile.
Also- if “most recent” videos aren’t first, your subscribers won’t want to return to your channel page to catch up, because the new ones are too hard to find.
I hope this helps. I’m puzzled why this isn’t solved by the technical folks, or communicated to people via YouTube. I went back to the original channel-page design for this very reason, and was really frustrated by the design.
For the record, I was working on a client project that required me to grab sample videos from prominent and attractive YouTube partners (iJustine, HappySlip, VenetianPrincess, HotForWords, CommunityChannel) and I saw that they’d all disabled playlists. What? You don’t believe it was a client project? You think I’m just cruising the list of the most-popular and prettiest girls on YouTube? You pig!
P.S. Like the new theme on this WordPress blog? I learned about it from Chris Brogan, and bought it immediately. It’s all SEO optimized, and was so easy to set up I did it without Jan’s help! It’s called THESIS and you can buy it here.
The Golden Girls Election 2008 Parody Video
What if each of the Golden Girls was played by one of the candidates. It’s worth exploring that through this hysterical video (found via Barely-Political.com’s blog, which called it the “funniest political video ever”).
See these sweet little old ladies with real audio overdubs by McCain, Bush, Clinton, Palin and Obama.
Amateur Versus Professional Content: BlahGirls Versus ClipCritics
And in round 256 of WillVideoForFood’s “Amateur Versus Professional Content,” Ashton Kutcher’s BlahGirls goes to battle with YouTube’s Clip Critics.
The boxers take their positions for what’s sure to be the battle of the… oh, dang.
BlahGirls is down for the count. And the trophy goes to Clip Critics!
Terrorist Bloopers & Outtakes (video)
How do I miss something this viral?
It’s called Terrorists Bloopers, and it’s a low-budget parody of the “Girls Gone Wild” advertisements. A funny spoof on cheesy commercials and terrorism. And the ending is worth waiting for.
Here’s some fun trivia about it:
- It was created by a Brooklyn NYC comedy troupe named Poykpac. Here’s another account (PoykpacLive) by the same group. Credits: Directed by Jonny Gillette, story by Paul Whitty, edited by Ryan Hunter and voiceover by Taige Jensen.
- If you’re a terrorist and want to avenge the creators of this parody, here’s where they live.
- Family Guy produced an Osama Bin Laden blooper reel that featured a similar joke. The creators say, “we humbly offer our sincerest apologies for having plagiarized something we’ve never seen.”
Trend Spotting: Tag-Team Vlogging… Brothers, Awesome Girls, Guys, Kids and Dogs.
It’s the hottest new trends in video vlogging since ZeFrank jumped the shark. A video channel shared by multiple people, each of whom takes a certain day of the week. The possibilities are endless.
Thought it’s probably an art form that has roots in the 1700s, this was mainstreamed by BrotherHood 2.0, where two brothers shared a channel for a year and communicated almost exclusively on a public stage. Then along came FiveAwesomeGirls, in which each vlogger takes a day of the week (they rest and shop on the weekend). Not to be outdone, the second-most intelligent gender came out with FiveAwesomeGuys.
We started 7AwesomeKids, and now there’s 5AwesomeDogs (here’s their canine debut).
What’s next?
