Video Contest: Promotion for “The Office”

So here are the details from YouTube on “The Office” promotion. I feel like I’ve blogged about this before, but it was probably one of my many posts that gets lost by WordPress when I select “Publish.”

Here is the website about the contest.

office.jpgNow I love that NBC is finally playing nice with the online video space. And The Office is absolutely my favorite television show that’s on the air currently. I TiVo every episode, and I have bought every DVD of both the American and UK original version. If you’ve ever worked in an office and enjoy low-key, laugh-track free humor, this is the show for you.

But… I’m perplexed at how paranoid NBC is about its content:

  1. When YouTube contacted NBC to let them know people had uploaded the SNL Muffin rap, they responded by demanding YouTube remove all of their content.
  2. They never responded to my multiple e-mails to request permission for this clip of my son watching The Office (he likes it too).
  3. The contest requires you to use ONLY select footage from the show. Nothing else.
  4. When you submit your entry, you must mark it “private” and let them know the URL.
  5. I’ll probably get a letter from NBC attorneys for using this image.

It’s a great idea to have a contest for “consumer created commercials,” but implemented with all of the paranoia of a network viewing online video as a threat. And by the way, there are about 4000 videos on YouTube that are searchable by the phrase “The Office.” Go get ’em.

You Can Actually Win Contests

Before today, the last contest I won was a liquor wagon in high school. My dad took it all away, but left me with the red wagon. But thanks in part to you, dear readers, I’ve won the first weekly “Be the Bee” prize. Here’s the note I received:

An Incentive to Post Comments

To encourage reader comments, I'm offering links to related sites from this blog — which gets as high as 300 people per day. All you have to do is comment frequently, and if your site is related I'll throw in a link on the right column. I'll also do a post covering your site if it's relevant to the readers of WillVideoForFood.

The blogs I'd like to identify (for myself and readers) are the following. Those that discuss:cricket.gif

  • Tips and software for amateur video makers
  • Online video websites and trends
  • Onine advertising- especially pertaining to video ads
  • Sites identifying video contests
  • Killer viral videos  (like those that identify a good viral video each day)
  • Other ways to make money through online videos

The only thing that won't get covered is a site or blog that's self serving (trying to sell stuff as opposed to being educational and helpful) or sites that really aren't related to this area. If you read this blog regularly, please let us know what else you read that's complementary. I want to update my RSS feeds so I'm reading related blogs, and I'm sure your fellow WillVideoForFood readers will benefit as well.

Panasonic Video Contest for Action Sports Clips

My first camera was a Panasonic. I called her Panny. I'd bring her to parties and make $200 videotaping the event. I'd also throw it on my shoulder whenever I got stuck in an awkward conversation- it works even better than the "I need to fill my drink" line.

Anyway, here's a Panasonic contest.  You have until mid July to enter… and we all know that entries will roll in about an hour before the deadline. For example, the Kiss Kiss Bang Bang contest had about 10 entries yesterday, and 40 today (deadline was at midnight).

Panasonic challenges filmmakers to show what "Share the Air" means to them in the form of a 24-second action sports film. Submitted videos will be reviewed and evaluated by Panasonic and renowned action sports filmmakers Ty Evans and Aaron Meza. Two Grand Prize Winners will each win a Panasonic HD video package worth over $16,000, including the new state-of-the-art AG-HVX200 High Definition camcorder, and $5,000 cash. Winning submissions will also be considered for national broadcast as Panasonic television commercials. In addition, four First Prize Winners will each win a video prize package worth over $1,000.

Select films will be showcased on Panasonic's Share the Air gallery at http://www.sharetheair.net/videos. Submissions will be accepted and prizes awarded for two distinct entry periods: May 17th – July 14th 2006 and July 15th – January 15th, 2007. One Grand Prize Winner and two First Prize Winners will be chosen from each entry period to win the following prizes:

Grand Prize Winners will receive:
     * Panasonic AG-HVX200 HD video camera
     * Two P2 8 GB memory cards
     * P2 storage drive
     * Panasonic DMC-LX1 digital still camera
     * $5,000 hard cash
     * Ty Evans signature series Ogio backpack
     * Atiba Jefferson signature series Ogio backpack

Two First Prize Winners will receive:
     * Panasonic PV-GS500 3CCD digital video camera
     * Ty Evans signature series Ogio backpack.

Avid 60-Second Video Contest Winners

Avid  announced the grand prize winner and five runners-up from its video contest that challenged entrants to capture their passions and tell a story, via video, within 60 seconds. More than 200 people entered. Taking viewers on a cross-country road trip, Brian Sharpe, a 27 year-old independent filmmaker from Chicago, IL, won the grand prize with a timelapse video titled “From Chicago to Vegas in 60 Seconds.” It's a really cool piece, and it scored him an all expenses paid trip to the NAB 2006 conference in Las Vegas and a free copy of the latest Avid Xpress® Pro software (a professional film, video and audio editing, effects creation and DVD authoring tool). Online Videofest from Panasonic

prize.gifPanasonic is running a contest via YouTube for videos under 5 minutes. Panasonic is the first non-entertainment company to run a promotion with YouTube. Panasonic will award prizes to makers of the four weekly finalist videos, including a first prize of a plasma high-definition TV and digital camera, worth about $5,000. The electronics company is also giving out prizes for users who rate the videos by joining the contest's group on YouTube, choosing the most creative review each week. Source- Adweek.
