YouTube Changes Algorithm: Are Amateurs Losing?

YouTube clearly changed its algorithm for getting views. As you can see in the chart below, I’ve dropped from 320,000 views per day to 80,000. That’s a nice number, but 25% what it was just months ago. I was on a nice streak for a few months, and before that was anywhere from 100,000 to 400,000.

I think it’s been several years since I averaged 80,000. Well… fun ride while it lasted. Maybe the 15 minutes are over. Still, I’m working on my first web series (Unlicensed Therapist) with hopes this is temporary.

  1. It’s way past the “are amateurs Losing?” point. It’s to the point were channels like mine in the 15-10k sub range are lucky to get 400 views per video, unless we use bogus tags and bogus tactics to get cheap views that really don’t amount to much anyways. Whatever they have done they are making the smaller channels give up or have discouraged them to the point of not caring for youtube like they did. What do they have to work and strive for when they are intentionally not given the chance to be seen. Have been doing everything in my power to do what youtube has said to do to get views and followship, nothing has worked on a constant basis. My rant, judge me if you want. I feel sorry for the other 500,000 channels that are going through this too.

    P.s. I don’t have auto correct, and I can’t write very well 🙂

  2. Hey,

so the algorithm being changed has meant that as opposed to grow in amount of views, I fluctuate up and down between an average of 1,000 views.

I was growing for a long time, steadily getting more and more views. I feel like I’m not getting any more views than I was 5 months ago, when I had 1,000-2,000 less subscribers.

I just hit 4,000 and I want to grow and properly grow with a dedicated audience, not artificial views like Ace77Man above said by false tags to get views.

I want to grow and have more people share in the fun I have in videos. I hope the algorithm changes back.

  3. I see fluctuations all the time, but my channel is very small so I usually attribute the fluctuations to world events, what kind of contact I put out, how much I promote it. What time I realize it, etc. Also one problem with YouTube is getting garbage subs. People that sub hoping for a sub back or people that automatically click on the boxed channels. Unfortunately many of the box subs are probably garbage too. But at any rate if I’m not getting enough views well I still think that I need to work on my content.

  4. My views have maintained constant 16-8000 views a day for the past year. However I have noticed a huge slump in many of the former people on top. Even now the people on top are slipping as new people come up. Tastes change.

  5. This makes a lot of sense, I was in a point of consistent growth, and things looked good. Suddenly my views plummeted, and now I feel like it doesn’t matter if I make videos or not, because nobody’s viewing them. At least I now know I’m not alone in this.

  6. I feel sorry for people who were on top of the heap, and appear to have lost views. I make a video, and get a few views. I have my loyal friends, I video for them, not food. (Though, Soylent Green is in their future..) I fill the “Alien ” niche. I may be discovered at some point. I know the MIB are watching…

  7. I actually noticed something very similar myself back to the May/June time frame.

I equate YouTube growth to rolling a snowball down a hill. You have to build something that’ll stick first and then things just roll. Every so often, YouTube brings a nice thaw and you have to start all over again. People who truly enjoy the community and the experience will last. Those looking for something else will quickly fade each “thaw”. Of course some channels are immune to the thaws.

  8. I haven’t notice any similar changes in my views, but I only get several hundred a day. My views to subscriber ratio is pretty close to 1:1 (although I don’t think that’s where most of my views come from).

  9. That explains why some of my videos which are on the first search page, are getting a fraction of views they were getting…….not good 🙁

  10. Yeah that “Panda” sheet is seriously discouraging. I was just getting to the point where I could make 2 bucks a day on blogger… now I’m back to nickles and dimes IF I’M LUCKY.

But I do have the option to monetize all my videos now, so maybe if I just make more videos, I can buy another day in the coffee shop… ? ? Good luck everyone.

  11. First they came for the video bloggers,
    and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a blogger.

Then they came for the video community leaders,
    and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a community leader.

Then they came for the video amateurs,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t an amateur.

Then they came for the independent video professionals,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t an independent professional.

    Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

  12. I am glad you did a post about this.
This change is permanent, according to a youtube employee’s post in the partner forum.

    It sucks to be us.

  13. Thanks for the post Nalts.
I had noticed this also. Doesn’t make a lot of sense though, less views, less income, everyone loses, including google!

  14. Omg, I cant believe what a big bunch of babies you guys are. Be grateful for what youve got – your talent, skill, subscribers and status as partners. Not everybody has it as good as you in the youtube world.

  15. So the videos and Ads are still being viewed the same as before, but most views/Ad revenue arent being counted? sounds like revvers’ old scheme!
