The Four Requirements for Viral Video
Meet Des. Here’s the bit… an Australian dad talks crap and his son animates it and posts them as Podcasts. Here’s what appears to be the first one, and it stopped me dead in my tracks. I want more of them.
For now online video is about four things… stupid, real, funny, short. If I stumble into one more 10-30 minute student film I’ll go back to watching “Who’s Line is It Anyway.” Don’t get me wrong- student films are great. For the right target with some time to explore their inner psyche. I watched two of them this morning instead of treadmilling.
But the ADHD busy online viewer wants, and let me repeat:
- Stupid
- Real
- Funny
- Short
Des has got it.
I’m no expert at what makes people click on clips- but is your list in order of importance?
Stupid
Real
Funny
Quick
I wonder whether the list is even shorter, and in this order??:
Funny
Real
Quick
or maybe – if you think about the obviously staged Diet Coke Mentos guys it just boils down to:
Funny
Quick (under 5 minutes)
Oh- I didn’t really rank them, but I’d say quick/funny are tied for first. If it’s funny it can be longer… if it’s less funny it better be short. Truth is, video length is viewed by many to determine whether they give the video a shot. So maybe length should be first.
I forgot a big one. CONTROVERSY.
Wow. He really syncked the mouth nice.
