NYTimes Features Video Creators Making Cash
Thanks to Micki and her Revver blog for this NYTimes article that features video creators who are making money. Ask a Ninja did $20K on Revver last year. Hope he set some aside for taxes. I didn’t.

Old adage is “think global, and act local” when it comes to marketing. But what if the Internet screws that up? What if a KFC ad that might be perfectly appropriate in Australia is offensive to Americans? Check Google analytics, Twitter search and “How Sociable” if you want proof of the damage. Even if you’re…
I don’t track technology stocks well, and I certainly don’t understand the nuances of video compression. But my friend Jim Walker (www.mindpalace.com) is the one that told me to buy Cisco stock in 1996. I didn’t. Now he’s hot on ON2. Here’s a recent press release the company issued. According to the release, ON2 is…
I MUST know what you think of this Bill Gates and Seinfeld campaign. Please scan this short article on the Huffington Post, and watch the clips if you haven’t. Then comment below, but be specific. Why do you like or not like them? Then, and only then, are you allowed to peek at the “more”…
[Update Oct 8, 2012: See comments around my video on this subject, and see Urgo’s response which reminds us that “amateur” is someone who isn’t paid… so that has almost always excluded many of us). “YouTube alienates amateur users by courting pros,” wrote the Chicago Tribune. The example is Ryan Douthit’s “Driving Sports TV” channel, which…
I was interviewed Friday by a major U.S. television network on the subject of online video, and caught some footage of the reporter’s loaded questions and biased reporting. You’ll hear how he tries to shape the discussion to confirm his own belief that online video is crap, and that big media will continue its reign….
Since the most-searched terms for this blog are around “how much do YouTube partners make,” I feel obligated to share these rare nuggets. YouTube has been quite silent about Partner income, but here are some nuggets reported in USAToday recently. Any ad revenue generated is shared, “with more than 50% going to the partner,” says…

i had no idea that amount of money could be made on revver! how much are you raking in, (if im not being too nosey)…?
Thats an awesome amount, considering how poorly placed the Revver Ads are (i.e. they NEVER realate to the video that just played)
I think if Revver had a wider range of advertisers, and therefore had a greater selection of advertisements to link to each video, then everyones earnings would go up, and also the advertisers would be getting better quality traffic, and so would be willing to offer a higher $/click.
I must ask myself, why would anyone click on an Absolut Vodka advert after watching anyones VBlog?
Admittedly Im very new to Revver so maybe I’ve arrived in a dry season of advertisers….
I think I’ve made $3Kish on both Revver and Metacafe.
To me the issue with Revver you point out is easily solved in two ways. First you need lots of inventory to attract niche advertisers that buy part (instead of all) of the ads. Second, you need a way to have creators classify their work more specifically.
The classification idea could be pretty neat addition to Revver…..
Nalts next video: “Damn my camera is such bad quality. I wish I had a better camera, then my Videos would be AWESOME”
[cue latest Sony DVD Digicam advert]
😀
Liam – considering some of the vlogs I’ve seen, I might be tempted to click on an ad for Absolut after watching them…or, running to the nearest liquor store!
Wow that’s a lot of money, maybe I should become the viral video expert, cough nalts cough, and make lots of money! 😛
Taxes…… SUCK! I think we’re going to start seeing a lot more stories like this, especially when (and if) youtube ever gets their rev share thing going…
I don’t think YouTube will, money-e. They’ve been riding free and easy on the copyright infringement / anything goes gravy train but now that they are going to have to start obeying laws, they’ll get bogged down and lose all their momentum. Most of their content providers will have to learn rules that Revver uploaders already know and it will feel evil to YouTubers after such a long ride of steal-anything-you-want.
That’s my 2 cents.

$5,022 earned on Revver so far
I feel that!
It wasnt until I looked around Revver and similiar sites until I realised how ‘bad’ Youtube was.
Theres sharing, and then theres stealing…
I can not figure our Revver. If Nalts or Marquisdejolie can help that would be great.
John
Personally, I like Metacafe. I’ve tried posting on Revver but it takes too much self-promotion. I’m giving LiveVideo a try, but they don’t pay, so it’s not the same.
It’s really cool that so many people are doing well on so many sites – people on both Revver and Metacafe have earned over $20,000 for their videos – that’s more than many people earn in a year in their “real” jobs.
Pretty cool.
Doesnt Meta Cafe ONLY pay if your the 1 featured video on their site?
Its not like a slow and steady income, like Revver?
I can’t figure out how to make a penny on Metacafe. My videos sit for weeks (some for months) waiting for approval. Then the gatekeepers rate my stuff low so that no one will bother wasting their time looking at my stuff. Doesn’t matter how much I promote my stuff. At least on Revver, I have the same chance as anyone else to get seen. What’s holding you up on Revver, yuma-j?
Metacafe is a strange beast for sure, i uploaded some test clips and and they stayed under review for ages(over a week easily), anyway I uploaded a rather humourous/controversial clip i made, but this time i didn’t submit it to “producer rewards” then as soon as it was approved i altered the settings for it to be in the producer awards and it qualified and made many dollar, but ever since i can’t get a repeat performance I think i offended too many peeps lol.
in order of money makey power, for me anyway.
Lulu.tv
Revver.com
NBC (US) and BBC (UK) clip requests
Metacafe
Mobile fone distribution deal (v crap)
Youtube nothing, but gained me the mass exposure that set all the above in motion, I think as a good will gesture over the next few weeks am gonna upload all the vids i took down from the tube, you never know who is watching now as it’s audience gets bigger and bigger.
is that $ in a year or a month?
That’s 15 months, if you were asking me.
thanks!
