Private Voting Moment… Posted for World

Someone will be doing a news story about idiot voters, and they’ll need some b-roll. Here you go. My private vote broadcast to the world. You know, I thought for sure they’d bust me with the camera. So I even had a spare tucked in my pocket. Nobody cared. One lady asked me if I was posting it, and I promised her it wouldn’t end up on TubeYou. Forgot to include that clip, or me telling the volunteer I was only there to offset my wife’s vote.

I’m just glad it’s all over. I’m going to really enjoy the top 100 highest rated videos for the next four years.

In a great moment of irony, Sarah Palin just left me a voicemail while I was typing this. I’m not sure it was really her, though. She didn’t call me buttercup like she normally does.

You know what’s odd? I’ve read 50 comments and it’s as if nobody has yet recognized that I stuck a random shot of me dressed as a black guy in the middle.(Update: YouTube Reviewed spotted it. Be sure to read my comment on the blog if this thumbnail offends you, whitey).

The Flowing River of New Media News: You, Blogs, Websites, Mainstream

The new-media news flows like a river. And you\'re the fog.When it comes to new-media news today, lots of rivers lead to the ocean. Steve Rubel (Micropersuasion) told me about this phenomenon two years ago when we hired him to speak at Johnson & Johnson, but now I’m seeing it first hand.

  1. I get all my news about cool stuff from you guys- the brooks of new media. You told me about Vloggerheads, Tubicide, YouTube partner earnings, etc.
  2. Then sometimes our news flows into larger rivers and lakes of  NewTeeVee, Wired.com, TVWeek or Inside Online Video.
  3. Then it eventually gets dumped like landfill into the murky ocean… when it gets picked up by high-strung mainstream reporters, who surf these new media websites to find something to write about it so their editors think they’re hip. And damn what they wouldn’t do for the days when they could smoke in the office.

So in effect, you’re the fog. The rest of us are just shaping it.

Hold on a second- that’s a cool quote. I have to go write it down. Okay I’m back.

Mrs. South Carolina Meets Chris Crocker in AOL News Ad

A video creator I get hundreds of positive and negative comments per video. As a result, I tend to leave only positive, constructive feedback on other people’s videos.

So I have to save my criticism for online advertising like this AOL News spoof on Chris Crocker, Mrs. America and tasers.

Let’s start positive:

  • Shows AOL as progressive, because they’re spoofing something recent and viral.
  • Nice way to be relevant to a web savvy target, and provide a wink to those who understand these references.
  • Nice concept- combining three former viral video subjects in the “where are they now” theme.

Needs improving:

  • The execution is somewhat slow, despite the rapid edits. I suppose it’s because so little happens in the video… no real plot progression. This is a great reminder for me to keep my sponsored videos ultra short.
  • I’ve always had a pet peeve for political columnists that try too hard to connect two unrelated but recent events. The scenario bringing these three together was a bit forced. Having Mrs. Teen South Carolina walk into a convenience store asking if she’s in Iraq (and then Chris Crocker use his “leave Mrs. Teen South Carolina alone” bit was a little too easy.
  • This smells like a spot that cost a lot (high production value, paid actors, and dolly shots). Was the production quality a bit better than it needed to be? I would have loved to see the three characters in public (even if it meant having to use actors pretending to be pedestrians).
