Madonna: Not a YouTube Virgin

madonna does youtubeMadonna aint acting like a virgin on YouTube. While other stars have fumbled in their attempts at the largest online-video site, Madonna gets 5 stars for her homepage video. Why?

  • We imagine this video was featured by the advertising department (likely a paid promotion for her new album “Hard Candy”). And although YouTube editors may not have selected it … it was funny, short and self depricating. Madonna is seen vacuuming the set of her music video.
  • The style was relaxed and had an amateur feel. Stark contrast from Oprah’s apperance in front of television monitors.
  • She looks pretty good for her age, and that makes me feel young. After all, I was in highschool when I won her album by being the 10th caller at the New Orleans radio station. I actually won ten records (the old-fashioned black CDs that were bigger than a laptop). Of course I had made friends with the disc jockey and he rigged it so I’d win. But now I’m sounding like a blogger drifting off into meaningless blah.

So go get ’em Madonna. I may not recall any of your songs since I last saw you in a limo, but you’re like a fine wine. You age well. Anytime you wanna do a collaboration on YouTube, you just let Uncle Nalts know. But I’m married, okay?

Best Video About Video Game: Arby ‘N the Chief

arby and the chief hugIf it’s one thing that puzzles me — maybe even annoys me sometimes — it’s the proliferation of videos that are simply video screen captures of a video games with added dialogue or music. They’re hard to ignore, though, and often dominate YouTube’s “most watched” and “best rated” videos.

But along comes this masterpiece and restores my faith in gamers nerds everywhere. It’s called “Arby ‘n’ the Chief: Episode 6 – “Brawl,” and was posted on Machinima, a YouTube channel based on content from Machinima.com (a gaming and entertainment site). The video, which is already past a half million views, and destined for the viral charts, was created by DigitalPh33r, and there’s a whole thread of discussion around his post.

Mind you, you’ve got to be in the mood for this. But if you are, it can be the most enjoying online-video experience you’ve had in a while. Honestly, I can’t stop making the sound, SOISOISOI and LOLOLOLLL.

In fact, this video inspired me to create my clone video (when he surfaces from the mud, he is impersonating these sounds, a reference lost only on everyone except me).

There is something absolutely addictive about this video, and you’ll find it impossible to escape some of the quotes. I saw it Saturday night for the first time, and have watched it many more times. The timing. The dialogue. The Internet slang. Even some touching moments then surprise parody. I know nothing about new video games or Halo, but I still had deep appreciation for this puppy.

Here’s the “Arby ‘N the Chief” series URL. An edited-down version of this video would find a secure place on Saturday Night Live. It’s just brilliant. Based on this Q&A the creator sounds a bit “socially challenged,” but that might have helped spawn the humor. The funniest people I know are not the most stable, zen humans.

Politics and Viral: McCain and Obama Music Video Parodies

yes we can no we can’t mccain obama music video parodyThis is the year where viral video will, no doubt, shape the election. And while this blog cannot possibly keep up on the political satire that’s overtaking YouTube, this one felt worth a mention.

Barack Obama’s speech inspired this music video featuring Black Eyed Peas. It’s called “Yes We Can.”

That spawned Election08 (comedians in LA) to produce a music video called “John He Is.” And here’s another parody by BarelyPolitical called “John McCain: No You Can’t.”

Candidly, I’m laughing more at the amazingly simple video by BarelyPolitical that features John McCain prank calling Hillary Clinton with a burp and a fart. Now that’s political humor for the common denominator.

Another Great Site for Free, Royalty Free Music

The online-video community is in constant need for good, royalty free music that doesn’t cost money. Most of us don’t make enough on our videos to warrant paying a lot. And we’re all sick of the canned stuff that comes with the editing software.

For a while, Kevin MacLeod of Incompetech.com had filled that void. Now the musician has helped his friend, Jonathon Roberts serve the same need. If you use the New Yorker’s music in your video, simply credit him and consider a modest $5 Paypal donation. As an example, here’s a clip we made (Squirting Water Boats) yesterday on our first day of vacation. The song is called Ragtime, and it brings an otherwise boring video to life.

Thanks to these guys for helping make online videos more interesting. It will only be a matter of time before Jonathon’s clips are pervasive as Kevin’s.
