Mark Cuban vs. Mark Mahaney on YouTube’s Profitability

June 26, 2008

How’d I miss this? On Silicon Valley, Citi analyst Mark Mahaney is all, like, “Google can’t help but make money from the [YouTube] — even without figuring out a clever video advertising solution… YouTube may generate up to $500 million in net revenue for Google next year.”

Mark Cuban — that billionaire entrepreneur who thinks he’s ‘all that‘ — says “All YouTube has to do is put some of the money they use to subsidize the world’s bandwidth costs towards content providers and they change their future.”

And I’m all, like, whatever, Mark 1. You’re an analyst who has probably has watched like three YouTube videos in your life (and never even heard of the 8th most popular dude). And, Mark 2, you’re a friggin’ know-it-all who’s pimping HDNet and your statements are accepted as gospel by the little wanna be Silicon valley losers.

YouTube, despite the drama, won’t be sold or make Google’s 2009 earnings even mildly interesting.

But when you’re as big as Google you can make some long-term plays. And if nothing else, the search giant has a bargaining chip with anyone that wants to share video via the web, and around Cable television’s previous Wall of China. So I’m all, like, Suck it Marks.

What about what Mark 3 (me) said to Mark 2?

I’ve watched more than 2 YouTube videos in my life, if that helps.

This post sounds suspiciously like something I would write, except there are no bad words and it actually has relevant content.

Hahaha! Love how you’ve translated this post into YouTubeSpeak, the language of the users. But you left out ‘WTF’ and ‘FAIL’.

“If YouTube really were able to generate a ton of traffic for their licensed content and monetize it, we would be hearing 2 things:

1. Management saying they know how to monetize.
2. Content providers bragging about how much money they are making, which in turn would act as digital gravity to every content producer in the world.”

We aren’t hearing any bragging, are we? You hear it? I don’t hear it. I have yet to be paid one penny for the 220 videos with hundreds of thousands of views I’ve uploaded to YouTube since becoming a Partner in December. I’ve got nothing to brag about, but c’mon, Kevin, you must be making $10-12,000 a month on YouTube, Brag a little.

1. There’s all those lawyers google has to pay and depending on how the court rules… then again 20 years later and look how well Exxon made out. Really a shame.

2. mdj – I thought Renetto was gonna spill it in his last video.

3. Mark can I have a grant?
