CBS Hearts Online Video November 22, 2006

Posted by Nalts in : Online Video , 4comments

eye.jpgHas the CBS eye seen the light? CBS research found that online video isn’t cannibalizing networks, but expands audiences according to Anders Bylund of ArsTechnica.

CBS conducted a poll on online viewing habits and found out that at least half of those online views were of shows the user had never seen on television, and often became a new fan of the show. That suggests that Internet video services are expanding the networks’ audience rather than cannibalizing it, while giving existing audiences an additional medium in which to find shows they missed.

“We’re looking at this as a key change in direction for us now and looking at our programming as dual distribution programming—over the air and on the Internet,” said David Poltrack, chief research officer at CBS Corporation.

Ben Folds’ “Ashlee Simpson Moment” is Prank On Fans November 22, 2006

folds.jpgBen Folds’ fans in the sold-out Hammerstein Ballroom (NYC) show last weekend thought the musician was having an Ashlee Simpson lip sync moment. Folds’ song began skipping on CD and the band had to restart the opening (see video). Finally, Folds’ drummer and guitarist marched off the stage in frustration.

Turns out the moment was another fine mission by the folks from “ImprovEverywhere.” Here’s the back story.

Michael Richards (Kramer) Does Racist Tirade November 22, 2006

kramer.jpgHere’s the video clip you’ve been searching for… it’s Michael Richards from Kramer having a racist tirade at the Laugh Factory.

As Leno said, “I had a horrible gig last night. I had to follow Michael Richards at the Laugh Factory.”

What I love about online video is that we can all see this exactly as it happened. No public relations spin… just pure, unadulterated racism.

Here’s Richards’ apology on Letterman. I might have thought it was a prank until I found this and news stories covering the event.

Don’t Tick off a Turkey This Thanksgiving November 22, 2006

madturk.jpgHere’s a video we did a few months ago. Don’t ask why I had a turkey costume on hand, but I managed to convince my brother-in-law to gallop around town and shoot footage. We even have a shot of a security monitor. The lady working the dollar store told me she couldn’t do it because it would all be on tape. But I charmed her a bit more and she obliged.

Anyway… here it is… “Mad Turkey.”

Need Detox of YouTube November 21, 2006

200.jpgI still wouldn’t bet on Google making its money back on the YouTube sale. But I do need to confess to spending an inordinate amount of time on YouTube lately.

I satired myself with this video celebrating my approach of 200 subscribers.  And today I finally made it (see graphic).

In other noteworthy YouTube news MadV’s “One World,” as of this writing, has received a record-setting 1895 video responses. That’s remarkable. Mine was titled “I Forgot,” and it’s lost in the pack.

I’ve received 5 video responses to my “One Drink” parody of it.

Online Video Viewers Have ADHD November 20, 2006

Posted by Nalts in : Online Video , 8comments

Well the study didn’t claim online video viewers have ADHD, but it might as well. Research released by Podzinger this morning shows that consumers play only 15% of their video. Their attention span is one minute (vs. 3 for audio). Few download anymore. And we’ll tolerate 10-15 second prerolls more than the 30 second monsters.

For more see Podzinger’s release.

Imagine for a moment you’ve just waited for 3 days in the rain. You’re about to buy a PS3 and some guy comes out dressed like a pimp. He’s holding a brand new PS3, but he drops it to the ground. The guy next to him slams it with a sledge hammer. See the video of SmashMyPS3.com (click here).

“One World” Has Palms Across Globe with Permanent Markers November 18, 2006

madv.jpgMadV– the masked street magician who does tricks to hip-hop music — is back after a 6-month hiatus with “One World.”

The video invites YouTubers to respond with something written on their hands. MadV was on several video sites (and once dominated the “most popular” section of Revver for weeks), and then vanished because of an alleged television deal.

This post initially suggested his featuring was “advertorial.” As you’ll see from comments below, this wasn’t the case…

Like two weak players forming an alliance before an immunity challenge, EMI and GoTiot (I hadn’t heard of it either) are banding together. EMI owns Capitol and Virgin. Here’s the story on Spin.com.

The story reports that EMI “signed a deal to distribute its videos to consumers for free via Gotuit.com, the two companies announced today.

“Gotuit offers viewers an exciting and high-quality way to enjoy our artists’ videos,” said David Munns, EMI’s North American CEO via a press-release writer. “They’re a valuable new channel for fans to connect with our artists’ music and creative vision.”
