The Salvador Dali of Viral Video October 26, 2006

salvador-dali-photo.jpgYou’ve seen his Pepsi Girl. You might have caught his LonelyGirl15 assasination. But I’ll bet you haven’t seen “Pussy Choke.” Watch in amazement as the cat escapes from Davideo’s mouth.

DavideoDesign in the U.K. He’s the Salvador Dali of Viral Video. He and Mrs. Davideo are creating videos with a surreal shock value that you won’t soon forget.

He’s shared some of his techniques with me offline, but I’m not giving away his secrets.  Doesn’t matter anyway. To immitate him you’d need his brain, psyche and cash for software you can’t afford.

NBC and Carson Daly: Finally a Way to Make Money on Viral Video Content October 25, 2006

Posted by Nalts in : Making Videos, Video Sites, Viral Video , 8comments

daly.jpgAnother big media player enters the viral space. It’s NBC, who stumbled initially in the “new media” space by suing YouTube for running SNL’s “Lazy Sunday.” But now they seem to be the leading major network to embrace viral video.

Carson Daly and NBC have launched “It’s Your Show TV” (www.itsyourshowtv.com). Viewers can submit short videos throughout October and early November. There’s a cash prize of $1,000 for the winners of each of 18 challenges, and a chance to compete for the big payday: $100,000 and the opportunity to get their video on NBC.

“User-generated content seems to have been everywhere,” Daly tells the New York Daily News. “What we’re doing is creating a site that offers a little more focus. And also paying people, because everybody’s making these videos but nobody’s getting paid.”

Pictured here: Carson Daly with Tara Reid. Daly is the first person to ever go on a date with Reid.

JibJab and John Landis Team Up for “Great Sketch Experiment” October 25, 2006

tallcopshortcop.jpgVisit JibJab to see the latest: Six 5-minute sketches directed by John Landis (Animal House, Trading Places). The winning sketch gets a $10K development deal with JibJab.

The videos are all a bit long for web viewing- should have been capped at 3 minutes, since it’s almost impossible to endure 30 minutes of video unless you’re holding a remote control and reclining. But they’re interesting little bits. The acting has huge variance. Some great, subtle comedian actors that appear to have lots of improv and sketch experience. Also a few that should probably be behind the camera.

My favorite: Small World. Nicely written. For even better acting, check out the prisoner in Tall Cop, Short Cop.

Will YouTube Become a Verb? October 25, 2006

Posted by Nalts in : Google, YouTube , 1 comment so far

Google is a verb. Nobody looks at you strangely if you say “I Googled it.” I believe I started hearing Google used as a verb almost exactly two years ago, although I’m sure it was around for much longer.

So MarquisdeJolie posts the following… will we be saying “I YouTubed a Video” in a few years?

I see YouTube videos on morning news programs more and more regularly. It’s the OughtSix version of ‘Xeroxing’. People who can’t even figure out how to navigate a blogsite or forward an email… know that if you make a video, you show it on YouTube. That’s the official franchise, isn’t it? A few years from now, the term ‘viral video’ will become obscure. The act of making internet videos will be called U-Tubing just like the act of making copies is called xeroxing. Have you U-Tubed on Revver lately?

Paranthetically, be sure to check out Marquis’ latest video: My Balls is Busted.

I discovered Neave.tv via Joe from WebVideoZone. He couldn’t describe it. Neither can I. Can you?
It’s strangely enchanting.

Coke Embraces Mentos Fad for the First Time October 24, 2006

eepybird.jpgIn a marketing decision that always perplexed me, Coke spent the better part of this year distancing itself from a cultural wave involving its product… the geysers resulting from mixing Mentos mints and Diet Coke. The Mentos team jumped on it almost reflexively — running ads behind the famed www.Eepybird.com ads via Revver and initiating a Mentos Geyser contest on YouTube.

In a surprise move, Coke has stopped running… and has even embraced the Diet Coke and Mentos wave. Coke announced a new “Poetry in Motion” video contest behind a teaser video of EepyBird’s next experiment. The trailer for EepyBird’s “Extreme Diet Coke & Mentos Experiments II” video (due October 30) can be seen on Google Video, followed by a video ad that has an embedded hyperlink taking viewers to this Coke contest site. The contest is in prelaunch mode, but will invite individuals to submit videos that involve ordinary objects turned into something interesting.

Pictured here are the creators of EepyBird, Fritz Grobe and Stephen Voltz. The experiment II looks like it will be a visual feast far surpassing their original work. The duo– who made a small fortune via Revver — are now serving their videos at EepyBirdy Google Video with a Coke promo and hyperlink. Presumably they’ve cut a handsome deal with Coke (I’m guessing it approaches six figures since they made at least $50K on Revver from the first experiments).

I’m surprised that Grobe and Voltz aren’t more dynamic in this ad. I expected the improv team to show some fizz, but they’re surprisingly flat. Still- Kudos to EepyBird for extending its 15 minutes of fame, and to Coke for demonstrating adaptive marketing. The best kind.

In defense of Sean and his sites, he asks permission. And, he ads, “I didn’t dress them in the morning.”

blogad.jpgWell I never expected to be anonymous on the web. But I also didn’t expect to be targeted by this Google Adsense advertisement.

Hmmm. $1000 a month to blog about my sexual dysfunction? Now there’s some interesting reading.

Post illegal content to YouTube and don’t expect it to protect you. Here’s an “All Headline News” article that shows violated copyright owners can go right to the uploader…

When Viacom Inc.’s Paramount Pictures asked for the name of a YouTube user who posted a 12-minute clip containing dialog from the movie the “Twin Towers,” the website quickly disclosed the information, without putting up a legal fight. Paramount Pictures promptly filed a federal lawsuit alleging copyright infringement against the maker of the clip, New York City-based filmmaker Chris Moukarbel… The incident leaves many questions as to what YouTube is doing to protect its users from lawsuits, as well as its privacy policy…  Laurence P. Colton, an intellectual-property lawyer at the firm of Powell and Goldstein LLP in Atlanta says that in Moukarbel’s case, “YouTube seems to have given up too easily.”
